Mobile Apps for Learning in a Kindergarten Classroom

iLearn With iOS Apps

These apps are all designed by the same company, iLearn With, and all are designed for a preschool to kindergarten age range in mind.  Each app teaches the child a different subject but can all be integrated into one classroom.  Progress of each registered child is tracked through a separate app called Parent Center, which shows the parent or the teacher which level each child should be working at as well as how they are doing in each subject area.  All the apps are set up similarly therefore, once the student knows how to use one app they are able to use the rest without having to learn a different interface.

i Learn With Boing: Math

What is it?

This app allows young children to learn basic math skills in an engaging way.  This apps teaches children and students to

count: up to 20

add: up to 20

order: put the list of numbers in the correct order

subtract: up to 20

while also teaching them number recognition.  This app also has a 2 player mode for peer-to-peer interaction as well as teacher to student interactions.

How it can be Used in a Kindergarten Classroom?

As a teacher, I could use this app to help track student progress with their math skills as well as help students that are having difficulty with basic number recognition in an engaging way, without feeling like they are singled out.  The app adapts to a level that is appropriate for the student which allows each child to work at their own pace.  A parent could also download the app which could give the child more practice at home.

iLearn With Boing: Literacy

What is it?

This app allows young children to learn basic literacy skills in an engaging way.  This app teaches children and students

letters: upper and lower case as well as name

phonics: how to combine letters to make syllables

words: putting the letters in the correct order to form words

The app also teaches listening and comprehension skills since all directions and instructions are done through speaking.

How it can be used in a Kindergarten Classroom?

As a teacher, I could use this at the beginning of the year to teach letters to the students.  I would use the app as a way to check the comprehension of the letters we have talked about as well as a way to allow students who are struggling to practice in an engaging way.

iLearn with Boing: Language

What is it?

This app allows young children to learn basic language skills.  This app teaches children and students

Vocabulary: basic objects

Listening Comprehension: following audio directions

Sentence Formation: place the words in the correct grammatical order

as well as observation and matching skills.

How it can be used in a Kindergarten Classroom?

As a teacher, I would use this app as a way to allow children to start understanding sentence formation as well as to help develop different vocabulary they may want to use.  In kindergarten, we do not worry so much about sentence formation but it could be a stepping stone for the next years where sentence formation becomes important.  Vocabulary is a big part of learning the reading and writing process so by introducing new vocabulary in an engaging way some of the words may stick with the students.

iLearn with Poko: Seasons

What is it?

This app teaches young children about the different seasons and basic weather information.  This app teaches children and students

Weather Conditions: basic conditions such as rain and clouds

What to Wear: weather and season appropriate clothing choices

Days and Activities: days of the week and activities based on weather

as well as critical thinking skills since sometimes it may be a process of elimination.

How it can be used in a Kindergarten Classroom?

As a teacher, I would use this app to teach my students the days of the week and which weather conditions occur in which seasons.  I would use the app to ensure all children understood the days of the week as well as when certain season occur during the year.

iLearn with Poko: Emotions and Colors

What is it?

This app teaches young children basic emotions and colors.  This app teaches children and students

Emotions: by listening to a clip the student picks what emotions were felt

Colors: match the color of the picture by mixing paint colors together

How it can be used in a Kindergarten Classroom?

As a teacher, I would use this app before an art class to show students how to make different colors of paint that they may want to use.  I could also use this app as a way to help students understand the feelings they will need to recognize in their friends and family to better understand what is happening and what others are feeling.

iLearn with Little Pim: Foreign Languages

What is it?

This app teaches young children basic foreign language skills.  This app teaches children and students in three different languages: French, Spanish and Chinese.  Students learn in 3 levels

Level 1: Nouns - introduction to vocabulary using pictures and auditory cues

Level 2: Verbs - basic verbs and how to connect them to nouns

Level 3: Sentences - building short sentences using level 1 and 2 knowledge

The instructions are all in the language being taught for full immersion in the language.

How it can be used in a Kindergarten Classroom?

As a teacher, I would use this app to help integrate a second language into my classroom.  I would especially use this app if I had a student where English was a second language and therefore they may feel more comfortable using their first language to learn vocabulary.  I would also use this app to get my students interested in a different language as well as to help them better communicate with an ESL student.  Having students understand what learning a new language is like may also help them better understand the struggle an ESL student may be having, therefore decreasing the likelihood of bullying for the ESL student.

iLearn with: Planet Boing

This is the reward center for all of iLearn With apps.  This may help the students feel motivated to continue their learning because once they reach a certain level they can go to this app and play with their rewards.

iLearn With: Parent Center

This is where I as a teacher can track all of my students progress across the different subject areas.  There are detailed progress reports for each registered child as well as for each subject area.  I as the teacher could use this to see where the students in my class need the most help so I can focus my teaching to help my students in the best way possible.

Overview

These apps are great for a kindergarten classroom because they are engaging and fun for the children.  The students may see them as games but we as teachers know that they are teaching the students more than they know.  As a parent and future teacher, I am excited to use these apps to help my child and students learn.  There is a total of 10 apps in this series along with the Planet Boing and Parent Center apps.
