I'm Here!

Discussion

1. Does the boy seem sad that he is not playing with the other kids on the playground? Why or why not?

2. Why do you think the boy was alone? Have you ever felt happy to play alone?

3. What would you do if you were on the playground and saw someone playing alone?

4. The boy might have been different and THATS OKAY! What would the world be like if everyone was the same? Everyone is different. Respect the differences.

Kenneth: I think the little boy was just trying to show that he wanted to play, but he was not sure how to say it.

@carliraisutis the buddy bench was on the news last week! A boy at a school here in Cambridge saw and it and the principal embraced the idea and put it into effect at the school. A buddy bench is a red bench put out on the playground and anyone who doesn't have a "buddy" to play with or is feeling lonely can go there to sit. Everyone knows this as the buddy bench, so they can go over and chat with the person or invite them to play with them! It is a great way to foster being inclusive!

@carliraisutis It seems to be very effective at the school that has implemented it. I thought it was a great idea and so did my students!

My first graders held a Market Day to raise money for a Buddy Bench last year. It is on the official website! I see many of the students looking for friends sitting on the bench and asking them to play. The boy in I'm Here may have needed one. This was a great lesson to all of our students that you have to be a buddy first, and ask a friend to play.
