Mrs. Vande Hei's Newsletter
April 13-17

A beautiful week has finally decided grace us with its presence. There is such a change in everyone when the sun is shining and the kids can enjoy some warmer temps outside. With the warmer weather brings a slight change in the kids' behavior. There is a tendency to forget about the expectations and rules that need to be followed. We have spent a lot of time reviewing what the expectations are in the different areas of our school. Please continue to remind your child that it isn't quite summer vacation yet and we still have a lot of work to do!

MS Walk

The students had a great time over the past week participating in the MS Penny Drop. At first they weren't quite sure what to do with their money, but then they figured it out really quickly! Pennies went in our bucket and all other coins or dollars went in other classrooms' buckets. It was a beautiful morning for a walk around the neighborhood to show support for such an important cause. Our students raised $1000 to help find a cure for this horrible disease. Thank you for all of your support!

What's in a Season?

We wrapped up our learning on weather and seasons. The students worked on deciding what to wear in each season and had to think about what their surroundings looked like during each season too. On Friday, we finished with the final assessment where the students had to put the seasons in order and share important weather that happens with each season. We will be moving onto learning about habitats next week with our trip to Barkhausen on Wednesday.

A lot Going on in Literacy

Your child knows that they need to be reading 20 minutes a night, but did you? This is a school-wide expectation and will be through 4th grade. They have come a long way with their word recognition and comprehension and will continue to do so with your support at home! We started focusing on word families this week as we wrapped up learning all 45 of our heart words. Our word family this week was  -at. We will continue to add words to our -at house as we find them in our stories. This week we also wrote our own menu for the Chewandswallow Diner, which went with our story, "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs". If you haven't yet, take a look at your child's fabulous food choices and prices!

Making Sense of Math

This week, we started working on higher level thinking math problems. We talked about how there are different ways to solve problems. I told them that years ago when I was in school, my teachers told me that there was only one way to get an answer. Now, there are many ways! How cool is that? They just have to be able to show how they solved their problem and then explain it. We will be continuing to do these types of problems for the rest of the school year, along with reviewing addition and subtraction equations.

*Friday, April 24th is an Early Release at 1:20.
*Read 20 minutes a day with your child. Talk about the stories with them to help boost their comprehension.
*Continue to practice the 45 heart words nightly with your child.
