Lack Of Equality
Since America became an independent nation, individuals have not had equal rights, equal opportunities and equal status as other American citizens.
Jim Crow Laws
Laws that segregated blacks from whites; these laws stopped the blacks from having equal rights as the whites. Even though they said "separate but equal" they had lack of equality.
This denied many rights to newly freed slaves, therefore there had lack of equality and were treated poorly in southern states.
Kept the blacks separate from the whites in private and public facilities, many times the black facilities were much more poor in quality compared to the whites causing a lack of equality.
Plessy vs. Ferguson
Was a Supreme Court decision that made it legal to separate racies as long as they both have equal opportunity. A example of this is bathrooms are allowed to be separated as long as both of those bathrooms were equal. However at this time the blacks bathrooms were not as nicely kept as the whites. And this resulted in a lack of equality.
Indian Removal Act
Law passed permitting negotiation of treaties to obtain the Indians' land and relocate them. Often times the natives were forced off of their land and slaughtered if they refused. They would have to go on the "trail of tears" and were treated harshly, including the rape of native women.
Trail of Tears
The Native Americans had their equality taken away as they were forced to leave their native homes as they were not considered to be as good as the Americans.
A term used to describe the powerful businessmen in the 19th century. They used exploitative practice to increase their wealth, and at the same time decreasing the wealth of others and taking their equality away from them.
This is when a company completely dominates a specific industry and controls the costs once this happens, causing lack of equality with other businesses.
This is the lower class of workers who work for wages in factories, mills, mines, and other businesses, usually preforming manual labor. They work in poor conditions for low wages and usually work for long hours.
This is the philosophy that's states that those who are more "fit" in the workplace to run a business will be more successful than those not born with these talents.
Chinese Exclusion Act
This denied the right for chinese laborers to immagrate into the US. Giving them less rights then those of other countries.
This is the belief that native born white Americans are superior to newcomers, therefore the newcomers were treated poorly and without equality compared to the white native born Americans.
These were unsanitary prison camps that provided little to no food or shelter where Cuban citizens were put in by Spanish General Weyler. This caused the Cuban in the prison camps to have little to no equality compared to all other.
World War I
These are those who oppose war based on religious ground, often times they were imprisoned just because of this.
These are those who oppose war morally and/or religiously and refuse to serve in the military. They were usually imprisoned because of their refusal to join the war.
Selective Service Act
This created the national draft, often times forcing many to go to war. This took away the equality of Americans as they no longer had a choice as to whether or not they want to go to war.
Espionage Act and Sedition Act
These acts made it illegal to spy on the government, resist the draft, or say anything negative against the Government. This caused the imprisonment of many.
This is the nickname for those of the IWW and anticapitalist organization, who were often imprisoned because of the beliefs they had on sending Americans to war. Their equality was taken away as they could no longer say what they wanted even though other people can.
1920's Dark Side
The Government makes all of the decisions regarding anything to do with the nation. The people and government are not equal as the government has all of the power of the nation.
Klu Klux Klan
This group did not feel that immigrants, Catholics, Jews, and African Americans were equal to them and therefore they were violent in their treatment towards them.
