They moved to Missouri shortly. A daughter was born named Mary and a second child followed. His name was unknown. Within a few weeks, diphtheria rambled across Missouri killing Margaret and the child while Jack was away from home. He married for the second time in Big Stone Gap, Virginia 1883. He met and married Nannie Fleenor. They had two children, son Opie and daughter Minnie Bell. As portrayed in the movie, Jack killed a man who accused him of cheating while playing cards. He joined up with a Soapy Smith Gang in 1888 or 1889 and was involved in a shootout. He disappeared from known gang movements but was reportedly in another gunfight in 1890.
