Suicide vs. Murder
This is a picture of a Raven. We chose this bird because in some cultures the raven symbolizes death. The raven perfectly symbolizes how our theme revolves death. We chose the theme suicide vs. murder because it is arguable that most of the deaths in the play weren't murder, they were self-inflicted death (suicide).
Shakespeare used the theme of suicide vs murder in the scene of Mercutio’s death . Shakespeare uses this theme because this was not murder it was him causing his own death. When Tybalt challenged Romeo, Mercutio stepped in for Romeo to fight Tybalt, instead of Romeo fighting him. “Boy, this shall not excuse the injuries that thou hast done me; therefore turn and draw.” (Romeo and Juliet Act 3 scene1). This quote is where Tybalt challenged Romeo to a fight. “Good king of cats, nothing but one of your nine lives; that I mean to make bold withal, and as you shall use me hereafter, drybeat the rest of the eight. Will you pluck your sword out of his pitcher by the ears? make haste, lest mine be about your ears ere it be out.” (Romeo and Juliet Act 3 scene 1) This quote is showing how Mercutio took Romeos place in the duel.
Shakespeare used the theme of suicide vs murder in the scene of Tybalt’s death. Shakespeare uses this theme because Romeo killed Tybalt because Mercutio blamed Romeo for his death. After Tybalt was fighting and accidentally killed Mercutio, he fled the scene. Once Mercutio was actually is declared dead, Tybalt returns and tuants Romeo to get him mad so he will fight him. “A plague o' both your houses!” (Romeo and Juliet Act 3 scene 1). This quote is when Mercutio cursed both houses. "Why the devil came you between us? I was hurt under your arm." (Romeo and Juliet Act3 scene1) This is when Mercutio blamed Romeo for his death. Why did Romeo kill Tybalt? One web site says Romeo killed Tybalt “Because Mercutio blamed Romeo for his death. “Why came you between us?" he asks, and then curses the Montagues and Capulets "A plague on both your houses." (Why does Romeo decide to kill Tybalt instead of accepting Mercutio death as an unfortunate accident?)
Romeo and Juliet death scene
Shakespeare used the theme of suicide vs murder in the scene of Romeo and Juliet death. Shakespeare uses this scene because Romeo commits suicide because he thought Juliet was dead; but she really wasn't, then Juliet sees Romeo and feels guilty because she caused his death so she kills herself. “Here's to my love! Drinks O true apothecary! Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die Dies.”(Romeo and Juliet Act 5 scene 3). This is showing that if Romeo cannot be with Juliet he rather die than to live without her. One web site says Romeo killed himself “Because he had endless love for Juliet and thought he could never be with her although he thought she was dead.” (Why did Romeo kill himself?)
*Two modern uses of our topic*
Teen suicide is when a teenager takes their own life. It relates to the play because Romeo and Juliet both committed suicide. This is a picture of a depressed teen sitting on the floor.
Murder out of revenge-
There is a television show called " Revenge". It is about a woman who comes back to her old neighborhood to get vengeance on all who have wronged her family. it relates to the play because Romeo kills Tybalt to avenge Mercutio's death.
