Paul Magloire was elected president in 1950, but after rioting broke out he resigned. The army took over and Papa Doc was elected President for Haiti on Oct 22, 1957

Government: Papa Doc taxed his citizens to finance military. He ignored the rural black population in his government expenditures. His polices had no effect on economic growth. He created "The Tontons Macoutes".

Why Haitians leave?: They left because they were under rule of Papa Doc, who is not quite a good leader. About 500 people permanently immigrated from Haiti to US. He created his private army."The Tontons Macoutes" to terrorize Haitian population.

Baby Doc: He was the son of Papa Doc. He became president after Papa Doc died. He then fled Haiti.
