Interview with Jeremiah Handley
Question 1: Why did you decide to fight for the Confederacy?
Jeremiah: I decided to fight for the Confederacy because I felt like I wanted to follow in the footsteps of my older brother, who has always been an inspiration and an example for me.
Question 2: What have you done that you are proud of?
Jeremiah: I am proud of staying with my mother. I feel that it was valuable that I spent time with her and took care of her while I could.
Question 3: What do you wish was different in your life?
Jeremiah: I wish that I didn't have to witness such violence on the battlefield. Had I known, I would not have joined the army?
Question 4: Jeremiah, what did you think would happen after you injured your leg?
Jeremiah: I was sure that I was dead. I knew that oftentimes diseases infected large areas of exposed flesh. Luckily, I was with a doctor who treated and cleaned the wound well. I find it very interesting that of the many people that died of infection, I survived.
When I wake up in the morning, it is my job to help cook breakfast. I heat and cook food over a nice, warm fire.
