52 IN 52

The 52 Albums that define my love for music

WEEK 52/Album 52

WHO: Portugal. The Man - "In the mountain in the cloud"

When: Fall 2011

Why: This album is almost the perfect culmination of my life story until the day I heard it for the first time.  It is a brilliant thought out record. It has its highs and lows. Has some sing alongs, has some great grooves and just solid musicianship.  Each song on this record has its own feeling. Like I have said many times with the other records on this list, it is never more true than on this album that every song plays like a different chapter in a beautiful book. The music and the words spoke to me like it was meant for my ears only.  Im not bashful telling people how wonderful this album is front start to finish.  Not to mention how brilliant the last song "Sleep Forever" is.

Where: I've seen PTM a couple times. Theyre great live unless they have a very obnoxious light show with them.

I cant tell you how or why I got into Portugal. The Man.  I had seen them a couple times in various places on accident. They never made that much of an impression on me.  They had a couple records that were good, but nothing stood out. They were just a band I knew about.

When I heard this album, I was lost. I had no direction in my life. I was everywhere and nowhere all at the same time. I had a million things going on and nothing to show for any of them.   This record (among a couple other major things) kinda shook me back into place.  I couldnt stop playing this record for a solid 6 months.  I could sit here and explain how every song had a specific meaning to me, but I wont.  But, they do.

This record put me on the path that I began leading up to the next chapter in my life. It closed the book on the person I was, and opened the door to the person I am now.  This record will always remind me of that.  This is the last record that made an impact on me before my life changed completely. This is the 52 of 52.
