The Happiness Machine

George Lambeiss

The Happiness Machine plays a very big role in Ray Bradberry's "Dandelion Wine". The Happiness machine is first brought up when Tom, Grandpa, and Douglas are all in front of the cigar shop. Leo Auffman said all machines lead to sadness. He was right.

The happiness Machine is a symbol for false hope. The machine is anticipated a lot in several chapters. When he finally makes it it just brings sadness. Everyone gets their hopes up when he is building it but then gets sad when they see it.
