Mrs. Vande Hei's Newsletter
Welcome back! It was wonderful seeing all of the childrens' faces on Tuesday morning. Most were smiling, but some were wishing they could still be in bed sleeping. It didn't take long to get back into the swing of things. With the Humpty Dumpty Drop on Thursday, all were ready to go!
Report Cards Ready
Your child's academic report for the third quarter will be live and ready on Friday, April 10th. (Probably not until the evening some time.) Please log into PowerSchool to see how well your child has been doing and what areas of improvement are needed as they finish out their kindergarten year. Thanks for all you do at home with your child to help them with their continued success.
Friday, April 17th from 6-8 pm is Howard Elementary's Science Night. Come laugh and learn with Jim Lenz's Comedy Science Show. There will be hands on activities, such as ice cream making, slime making and giant bubbles with BayPort's Chemistry Club, and rocket launching with Jim Lenz. You can also challenge your friends to Ultimate Party Games such as giant Jenga or connect Four! This event is FREE!! Come out and have some fun!
Weather and Seasons
Understanding the difference between weather and seasons can be hard for some students. Then, when you have to be able to name what types of weather happen in different seasons, that can be even a more daunting task. This week we talked about different types of weather that happen in our area and even discussed weather that we don't see here like hurricanes. We made a weather wheel that the kids can use at home to show what the weather is like every day. We also have a cool seasons song that we all seem to like. It is quite catchy!
Learning our Nursery Rhymes
Hickory Dickory Dock, Jack and Jill, Little Miss Muffet, these are all nursery rhymes your children know amongst many others. We reviewed many of them this week with our nursery rhyme book and had some fun with Humpty Dumpty. He fell, cracked in half, but we used a bandaid, tape, and some glue to put him together again. Your child is doing a great job sharing their writings during our Reader's Chair part of our Writing Block. Many are writing beyond 2-3 sentences and need more paper! They love to write!
Addition and subtraction facts along with problem solving will continue to be a strong focus throughout our upcoming weeks. We have spent time this week working on partners. For example, 5 and 3 are partners for 8. Also, 6 and 4 are partners for 10. The kids played games this week with subtraction and learning about partners. Continue to review counting by 5's and 10's and also discuss the words 'odd' and 'even' when counting by 2's.
Humpty Dumpty Drop
The Humpty Dumpty Drop was a hit! We had some scrambled eggs when we finished and some eggs were still raw and seemed 'unphased' by the drop. Enjoy some of the photos of the kids!
Spring Dance & Raffle
Our school's spring dance is approaching! It will be held on Thursday, May 14th. This is a fun event for all of the students and staff. All of the money raised at the event supports our students and school! To help, each classroom puts together a themed basket for the raffle. Our class is doing a "Picnic" themed basket. We will be needing help putting it all together by gathering items for it! Next week, I will be sending a letter home explaining this more in detail. Please help in whatever way you are able to do so. If you are not sure what to get and prefer to donate money, I will simply go out and purchase items that we need to help fill the basket.
