The Moon's Importance
The Moon's Role
The moon is very interesting. It has 8 different phases, those 8 phases are the new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, and waning crescent. You have probably heard about some of these phases or even seen them, the phases are very cool to know. An eclipse is when an object in space comes between the sun and a third object, it casts a shadow on that object. There are 6 kinds of eclipses, they are the solar eclipse, total solar eclipse, partial solar eclipse, lunar eclipse, total lunar eclipse, and partial lunar eclipse. Tides are the rise and fall of ocean water that occurs every 12.5 hours or so. The two types of tides are spring tides and neap tides.
There are eight phases of the moon, they are the new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, waning crescent. We have phases because the changing relative positions of the moon, Earth, and sun. Since the moon orbits Earth, you see the moon from different angles. People in other countries use the moon phases for light. When the moon is in the waxing phases it seems to grow bigger. When the moon is in the waning phase its seems to be growing smaller.
Tides are the rise and fall of ocean water that occurs every 12.5 hours or so. Tides are mainly caused by differences in how much gravity from the moon and the sun pulls on different parts of Earth. There is a spring tide, which means combined forces produce a tide with the greatest difference between consecutive low and high tides. There is also a neap tide, which means a tide with at least difference between consecutive low and high tides. Changes in the positions of Earth, the moon, and the sun affect the heights of the tides during a month. People that fish for a living need to know what the tides are because they could get trapped in the tides.
An eclipse occurs when an object in space comes between the sun and a third object, it casts a shadow on that object. There is a solar eclipse, total solar eclipse, partial solar eclipse, lunar eclipse, total lunar eclipse, and partial lunar eclipse. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly between Earth and the sun, blocking sunlight from Earth. During a lunar eclipse, Earth blocks sunlight from reaching the moon. People need to know when there is an eclipse because it could get dark and they wouldn't have any light so they might want to bring a light with them.
Without the moon we wouldn't have night and day. We also wouldn't have tides and tides are important to fisherman and people that work at sea. Also without the moon we would have a more extream climate. We would also have shorter days. There would be a lot of water on one side if we didnt have a moon. The moon is very important to us on Earth becasue of all these things.
