Chapter 3 & 4
"It was this red hunting hat, with one of those very long peaks...I swung the old peak way around to the back- very corny, I'll admit it, but I liked it that way. I looked good in it that way."(Salanger 21).
This quote relates back to the American Dream. At Pency Prep the American dream is already carved out for them, Pency Prep is supposed to "mold" young boys into fine men. However, Holden does not believe in this carved out road. The American dream here is all the same showing no originality. In this quote the red hat shows individuality, no one except him has this style or wears anything remotley similar. Holden by wearing this hat, is breaking the reformes of the 1950s society. Holden by breaking away from Prency Prep and dressing to how he feels comfortable, he is carving his own path instead of following the path already carved for him, allowing him to follow his own American dream.
