Sharing the planet with Grade 3

Dear Parents,

Our next unit addresses the transdisciplinary theme, Sharing the planet. The Central Idea is

The ways in which people use water and air affect life on earth.

Students will learn to appreciate the finite nature of earth's precious resources which human beings take for granted- water and air. Students will conduct experiments in order to find out the properties of water and air; they will research about how people use and abuse these precious resources; they will learn more about sustainability and find creative solutions to complex water and air related problems.

As parents, you could address issues that directly relate to your child and his or her environment. For example, in Hyderabad, water is a scarce commodity. We need to be responsible citizens and find ways and means to save it. How would you build an awareness about this? You could take your child on a trip to a water reservoir or lake and study it!  Pictures and comments about your findings could be posted on our class blog or Edmodo. Encourage your child to read non-fiction books related to water and air. Before you open the book, ask them to predict what they know about the topic, and then encourage them to wonder what other interesting information they could find in the book.

We plan to take a trip to one of the famous water bodies in Hyderabad in order to find out how they preserve water and keep it clean. Any suggestion from parents is welcome!
