Lone Survivor

Book by: Marcus Luttrell
Book report by: Gunner Malone

June 28th, 2005. Four Navy SEALs; Michael Murphy, Danny Dietz, Matt Axelson, and Marcus Luttrell are inserted onto a mountain range in Afghanistan's Kunar Province to conduct a recon operation on an insurgent leader who has been causing chaos in the region for weeks. The operation soon goes wrong when 3 goat herders stumble across Marcus and his team, forcing the SEALs to capture them. They're faced with a decision. Let the goat herders go, and have them run down the mountain to the village below [ultimately revealing their position to 80-200 Taliban fighters], or not let them go and return to the US with a prison sentence for murder. Find out what happens to them in this riveting and moving tale of perseverance in the face of adversity.

"I will never quit. I persevere and thrive on adversity. My Nation expects me to be physically harder and mentally stronger than my enemies. If knocked down, I will get back up, every time. I will draw on every remaining ounce of strength to protect my teammates and to accomplish our mission. I am never out of the fight."- Navy SEAL creed

Theme: Hopeful; inspiring.

The grave of Michael Murphy.

What would you have done in their situation? Would you have let the goatherders go - or not?

Marcus and the man who saved him, Mohammad Gulab.

I would recommend this read to anyone who has the maturity to understand the story, because it's a riveting and moving tale of brotherhood, the will to succeed, and exemplifies the never-quit attitude that Navy SEALs embody.

Ahmad Shah, the Taliban leader they were to conduct reconnaissance on.
