About William Ramsay
~William Ramsay was born 2 October 1852 in Glasgow Scotland.
~ William was married to Margaret Johnstone Marshall and had two kids.
~In the year 1872 he became assistant in chemistry at the Anderson College in Glasgow and two years later secured a similar position at the University there.
~In 1880 he became professor and principle of Chemistry at University college.
~William moved on to the chair of inorganic chemistry at university college, in London he decided to retire in the year 1913.
~William discovered Argon by isolated a heavy component of air,Which did not appear to have any obvious chemical reactivity.
~In the year 1904 ,he received the nobel prize in Chemistry.
~In 1916, he died of nasal cancer in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire at the age 63.
~Argon is obtained commercially from liquid air. It is used in electric light bulbs and fluorescent tubes at a pressure of about 3 mm.
~It is also used in glow tubes and photo tubes
~Argon is frequently used when an inert atmosphere is needed.
~Argon is used as a motionless gas shield for arc welding and cutting.
~Argon provides a prospective atmosphere for growing silicon and germanium crystals.
