Background Information On Poseidon
Poseidon is the god of the sea and protector of all aquatic features. Brother of Zeus and Hades, after the overthrow of their father, Cronus, he drew lots with them to share the universe. He ended up becoming lord of the sea. He was widely worshiped by seamen. He married Amphitrite, one of the granddaughters of the Titan Oceanus.
Role in The Odyssey
In The Odyssey, Poseidon gave many challenges to Odysseus after he got the news that Odysseus stabbed out his son's eye. His role in this epic by Homer was he was one of Odysseus's divine antagonist. Poseidon pushed his ships off course and he also created giant waves that destroyed Odysseus's ships and drowned his men. Even when other gods tried to help Odysseus, Poseidon still opposed them.
