The Fourteenth Goldfish

October 2014

Mrs. Stoll's and Mrs Curry's 4th grade classes will be participating in the 2014 Global Read Aloud.  We are reading The Fourteenth Goldfish over the next 6 weeks.  We are looking forward to reading, learning, sharing, and discussing the book.  The best part will be getting to know another 4th grade class!

Look at the Title and Book Cover - What are your predictions, questions, comments, or thoughts about the book we are going to read?  Watch the book trailer - did that initiate more questions?  How did the author, Jennifer Holm, use her personal experiences to help write the book?

Answer Here:

Bella - How did the grandfather get inside of the fish? the way she used her personal experience was she use Dr.Melvin based on her father.

Owen: I think that the book is about a scientist who has bought 13 goldfish and did tests that killed them all exept one named Goldie.It has a connection to her life because she based the scientist off of her dad.

Christian-I think that it is about a girl that wanted a goldfish and got one that out lived 13 other goldfish which he got after he got that one so it lives forever so the girl wanted to see what is making it survive that long.

What has happened so far in Chapter 1-5.  Write a Summary.

Answer Here:   First was the introduction then we learned that the goldfish that was dead was not the one they had for 7 years it was the thirteenth goldfish next while she was at home alone with a babysitter they got a message that grandpa was in the police station and she needs to get him out so she will be late after that when her mom finally gets home the babysitter quits and a teenage boy is following her then she learns its grandpa and learns that he's invented the fountain of youth and needs her to somehow get into his lab and get the machine to make him older again.  by James

Answer Here:  A connection that I had was a text to self.  I had also been very disappointed when I believed  that one of my favorite toys , my slinky  lasted forever.  Until my mom told me that she just bought a new  slinky at Target.  I was devastated .  That was my text to self connection.  By Kate

I have had a text to world connection because I've seen a commercial were a kids dad rushes to replace the fish in the living room and the kid thinks it was never dead. There is also another text to world connection because every time a living thing died another on is born. by:Stormie

Adam: Why did grandpa Melvin make himself younger? Jennifer was inspired to create the character Melvin, because her dad was a pediatrician who loves science.
Tyler: How did Ellie determine that Melvin was her grandfather? Melvin turned himself young. He is fourteen and a goldfish

Holly: Why is the story based upon a goldfish? The reason why it relates to her life because Ellie she was based on Jennifer's middle school life and grandpa was inspired by Jennifer's dad.

Elaina: How come the the other thirteenth goldfish die except one of them? I predict that Ellie and her dad will go buy fourteen goldfish and thirteen will die.
