Networking

To be able to work effectively as a receptionist you need be connected to a Local Area Network and a Local Access Network.

I would recommend a bus topology as it is the most practical setup because its the easiest and cheapest to setup and maintain with all systems on the network. Also being connected by a coaxial and T - Connector. I would place the receptionist at the top of the bus network as she would get the fastest speeds and the strongest connection out of the other people connected .

I would recommend a client server network because every client can access the same data which can also be easily be backed up. It is also secure so noone who shouldn't be on it can not get on it without granted access, also using a client server you can connect to the same printer on any PC as the printer is on the client server. Also using a client server you can also block unnecessary websites.

The receptionist will need to be able to connect to the internet to order new stationary and use communication software such as email and Skype. The internet is an example of a wider area network. To be able to connect to the internet the receptionist would also have to connect to a router that is connected to the local area network to the wider area network to allow data to travel between both. The router is a gateway, at the access points between both networks. The receptionist would also need a ISP (Internet Service Provider)

Using the Network to Manage Resources

User Logins (Restricted Access) - Using the client network you can set restrictions on what users can access and you can have personal logins to keep separate employees information and data private.

Shared Hardware Resources - Using the network you can share resources in the workplace like printers/storage and scanners etc.,

Shared Storage - You can also share the storage using a hard drive connected to the network so resources can be shared between employee's

Shared Security - You can also share security by having a licence for antivirus that can be used across multiple computers

Data Backup - Data backup is the same as shared storage except all the work will be basically saved to another hard drive on the network so there will be a clone of everyones work.

There are possible wired and wireless network issues:

  • wireless network adapter switch that's not enabled

Make sure the adapter is enabled so you can access the network

  • WEP,WPA or WPA2 security

WEP is vulnerable to being hacked into or connected to by people who down work at the place where the network is hosted and WPA2 is a lot more secure than the others.

  • corrupted or incompatible drives

reformat the hard drive  so that it is no longer corrupted.

  • missing updates

Do an scan online for the new or missing updates

  • network connection settings

check the network settings to see that your device or PC is connected to the network.

Software Licences

Open Source - An open-source license is a type of license for computer software and other products that allows the source code, blueprint or design to be used, modified and/or shared under defined terms and conditions.

Single User -  A single User license is a type of license that can only be used by one user on that machine as it is only licenced for one person to use

Multi User -  A Multi User license means it can be used by more than one user as it is licensed for example a family to use.

benefits of software registration

benefits of software registration is that you can have all the features of the software if you pay for it and you'll get all the new updates and support from the company

Also the benefits of installing software is that you have new functions and capabilities on your PC and you can do more productive work.
