Adarand Constructors VS Pena

Summary: Adarand is a construction company who was denied the contract on a federal highway project due to the fact that they weren't considered a minority company. It is a fact that Adarand was the company with the lowest bid. In the federal contract it states that the main contractors would receive additional compensation if they sub-contracted to "socially and economically disadvantaged individuals.", but in this clause it includes that socially and economically disadvantaged individuals includes minorities such as: "Blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans, Asian Pacific Americans and other minorities.". Adarand successfully sued the Secretary of Transportation saying that the federal governments initiative to hire minorities denied him equal treatment.
Amendment involved: The 14th amendment, which is equal rights for all citizens.
Cause and Effect: All racial classifications must pass strict review.
