Basketball was invented by James Naismith, James created it in Springfield, Massachusetts. Baseball was created by Abner Doubleday, and he created it in Cooperstown, New York. Lacrosse was invented by Indians in Canada, and was modified by European immigrants. Football was created by Walter Camp, and originated in Ulgham, Northumberland, England.
Basketball is very popular around the world, it is most popular in the United States. It is played all around the world! Basketball started with eighteen men in a YMCA gymnasium in Springfield, Massachusetts, has grown into a game that more than 300 million people play worldwide.
Baseball's popularity has been decreasing, baseball was invented in 1839. The first World Series was played between Pittsburgh and Boston in 1903 and was a nine-game series. Boston won the series 5-3. In 2001, San Francisco's Barry Bonds broke the all-time single-season home run record when he hit 73. He broke the mark of 70, set by St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Mark McGwire in 1998.
Lacrosse is the fastest growing youth sport in the United States. The traditional aboriginal Canadian version had teams ranging from 100 to 1000 players on a field nearly two miles long. The game was played from sun up to sundown for two to three days. Harvard beat Princeton 3-0 in the first college lacrosse tournament held in 1881.
American Football grew out of English sports such as rugby and soccer and became popular on American college campuses in the late 1800s. The American Professional Football Association was formed in 1920; two years later it changed its name to the National Football League (NFL), which would ultimately become the major league of American football.
