What caused the death of General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson?
The unsolved mystery...
General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson played a huge role in the American Civil War. He was a key figure for the Confederate troops, due to his great leadership skills, and his strategic thinking. The passing of the general greatly affected the Southern troops. But what actually caused this?
For years, historians have pondered over one reason. In a Civil War battle, there was a huge confusion. There was chaos on the field, which was full of confused and terrified soldiers. In the mania, a Confederate troop had accidentally shot General Stonewall Jackson, which was a great downside for the South. But other historians think otherwise...
Another theory goes like this. After the Battle of Chancellorsville in Virginia, many Confederate troops were wounded, and fatigued. As the general walked towards the camp, Confederate guards could only see his silhouette. Having mistaken Jackson as a Union soldier, the guard on duty felled his own leader. Therefore, the loss of Stonewall Jackson plummeted the morale of Confederate troops. This was one theory of how Jackson met his demise.
An additional theory was developed about the general's death. Again, in the Battle of Chancellorsville, Thomas was returning back to his camp. Again, the shadow of the general looked the one of a Union soldier. But this time, when he was shot, he caught pneumonia a few days later and then died to that.
In my opinion, I think all of the theories make sense. As theories I mentioned are similar, it is difficult to choose one definite answer, that I truly believe in. The first theory, which stated a misfire during a confusion in battle. The second theory stated that the shadow of the general was considered as a Union soldier, and was shot. The third theory followed the same "steps" as the second one, but Thomas was then killed by pneumonia.
So as we can see, there are many theories to how General Stonewall Jackson unfortunately met his demise in the American Civil War. This means that we cannot come to a definite conclusion as to how General Jackson died in the war. There will inevitably be a straightforward answer. But as for now, we will just have to wait and see....
