Michelangelo's Hidden Message
Is there a secret hidden in the Sistine Chapel - Is God's voice construct painted as the brain of man? In the central panel on the ceiling, Michelangelo painted God creating Adam. On closer look, one can see the dark covering surrounding God is a perfect anatomical illustration of the human brain. The figure of God lies on top of the limbic system, the emotional center of the brain and possibly the anatomical counterpart of the man's soul. Notice how the female figure (some think it is a representation of Eve) is protected behind God's left arm as she has not been created yet. She is superimposed over the rational -intellectual side of the brain. God's hand does not touch Adam, yet Adam is already alive, eyes open, and he is completely formed; it is like the spark of life is jumping from God to Adam across that synapse between their fingertips. Michelangelo's intent is to show how Adam is to "receive" something from God - his intellect- and thus man is able to "plan the best and highest" and to "try all things received" (Michelangelo, 1510). Michelangelo was a precursor to the Reformation as he was devout believer, but believed the path to God was not found only through the Church, but through direct communication with God.
