Space Race

The United States and the Soviet Union wanted to see who had the best space technology, who could make the first manned space craft and launch it into space, and to see who could be first person to walk on the moon. That was all very important, because it was a test to see what country had the best science,  technology, and economic system. The competition began in 1955. On October 4, 1957 Russia made their first successful satellite and launched it into space. Then on April 12, 1961 Yuri Gagarin was the first man to orbit into space. On February 20, 1969 John Glenn was the first american to orbit earth. The Eagle landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. Finally the competition ended in July 1975.
