Life as a Soldier

Journal Entry 1

By: Mary Smith

When I was 16 I want to be a part of the war because I didn't like slavery but I wasn't allow to be a soldiers so I decide to be a solider dressed as a man. I told my parents that I wanted to be a part of the war to end slavery or at lease try to. When they found that I want to be a soldier they agreed with me that it is a good idea to fight for what you believe in. I made the finally decide and went to become a soldier but first I needed to be trained. When I was being trained it was not easy to become a soldier I need to be trusted and when I was done in training it was time to take action to help win the war.

Journal Entry 5

The hours sad I left my dear

Whose sighs and tears when i'm on my way

I thought her heart was breaking

In hurried words I say the best

I breathed the words that come my way

And to my heart in anguish pressed

The girl I left behind me

Then to the east we go our own way

To win a name in our story

The place in my sight

When they assigned me

I shared the glory of that fight

Sweet girl I left behind me

But then come the day

In which we had no sharing

But now our soldiers won

Singing worthy of our size each son

Sweet girl I left behind me

The hope of final victory

Within my burning

Is wondering thoughts through me

And of my wonderful returning

Still with the love that blinds me

The girl I left behind me

Journal Entry 6

Dear, Sister

Living in a camp at the moment is a terrible life. We are running low on food to eat and clean water to drink. We are drinking ditch water and when we are walking there is no time to cook the meat so we have to eat raw beef. My favorite food that we have at camp is cooked beef when we have time we do cook it, it tastes great. I hope life is going good for you at home. I hope to see you soon.

Love,

Mary

In the camp I am staying at there are many illnesses. Lots of people have quickstep and some people still are waiting to be treated for a wound I have seen many people died without even being in a battle. Some of the soldiers
