Hurricanes

How Hurricanes Form

For a hurricane to form, the weather conditions have to be perfect. They only form over warm ocean water.  The water has to be above 79 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, The winds come together and rise upwards. The humidity up in the air creates the big storm clouds. The winds around the clouds spin the clouds around creating the eye of the hurricane and the strong winds. The Coriolis effect is needed to create the hurricane.  Hurricanes typically form between 5 to 15 degrees latitude north and south of the equator.  At the most, hurricanes can span up to 600 miles across. The minimum wind speed for a hurricane to be is 75 miles per hour. The maximum ind speed that a hurricane can be is 200 miles per hour.

Historical Examples

There have been hundreds of hurricanes in the past. One of the most devastating hurricanes that happened in the past decade is hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Katrina happened in 2005. 108 billion dollars were needed just to fix property damage!  1833 people lost their lives. Another one of the most powerful hurricanes in the last century was hurricane Hattie. Hurricane Hattie happened in 1961. 70% of houses were damaged. 60 million dollars was needed to fix just property damage. This hurricane killed about 2000 people. Both of these hurricanes were very devastating.

A Hurricane's Impact On Human Life

People have changed a lot about how they prepare for hurricanes over the past century.  One way that we have changed is that we have weather channels on the TV that can predict when a hurricane is coming. Also, some people build their houses to be hurricane safe. Next, people make an evacuation plan. Lastly, people put first aid kits in their car and in their homes just to be extra safe and cautious. These are only a few ways that people have changed how they prepare for hurricanes.
