WHAT IS SYPHILIS????

-Syphilis is a highly contagious STD
-It can cause various complications and can even cause death if not treated  


WHERE DID IT COME FROM???

-"Columbian" and "pre-Columbian" Hypothesis
-"Columbian": Syphilis was carried to the America's to Europe by Christopher Columbus and his crew

How do you get Syphilis??

1.) Direct contact with a syphilis sore
2.) Mothers can pass it on to their babies during pregnancy

How do I know if I have Syphilis?
-Symptoms of syphilis occur in 3 stages..

STAGES OF SYPHILIS

STAGE 1: PRIMARY STAGE
-Appearance of a sore

-During the first stage of syphilis a bump or two will appear in the infected area.


Stage 2: SECONDARY STAGE
-Rash appears on the body usually on the palms of hands or bottoms of feet

Stage 3:TERTIARY/LATE STAGE
-Occurs when disease is left untreated
-Can cause stroke, paralysis, deafness, or dementia
