Aka Arctic wolf

Features

The arctic wolf has round ears to contain heat. They have a shorter muzzle and shorter legs then the other wolves. They also have hair between their feet and long, thick fur to keep them from the frezzing cold. They measure from 70 to 175 pounds and very from 3.2 to 9.2 ft long. females are usually smaller than the males.

Their environment

Arctic wolves inhabit the arctic regions of North America and Greenland. The arctic covers different countries like Canada's arctic archipelago and British Columbia , The United States' Alaska , Iceland, Norway, Sweden,Finland, and Russia. The arctic regions are bitter cold. In the winter it is covered in snow and ice.The sea is inhabited by large sheets of ice. There are mountains and tundra where the wolf roams. The tundra has lush shrubs and grasses. The perfect place for prey to eat the lush landscape. Some wolves live in various parks and sanctuaries. The White Wolf Sanctuary , in Central Oregon , helps wolves be protected in the wild. They also help abused and mistreated wolves have a fun place to be in.There is also a wold preserve in Columbia, New jersey. This preserve is called the Lakota Preserve that has educational wolf tours to so people can learn more about wolves. There are also numerous parks that spread through out their territory to help protect the endangered animals.

The canine family deceded from an animal called Tomarotus. It had a fifth toe like wolves and dogs do today. it eventually migrated t Eurasia Which then evolved to a wolf like mammal . Then it migrated to North America. From North America the Dier wolf evolved in North America. Gradually it evolved and became extinct due to climate changes around 7000 years ago it became the grey wolf. The grey wolf went north to find diffrent food sorces. it eventually adaped to the cruel north and became the Arctic Wolf.

Adaptations

The Arctic wolf has many ways to survive in there harsh environment. They have very thick and long coats to keep the cold out. They also have fur in between there feet to protect them from the snow covered ground. The Arctic wolf also has snowy white fur to blend into the snow. Their ears are more rounded then the grey wolf to keep the body heat in more efficiently.

Fitness

The Arctic wolves fitness is camouflage. The color of their fur is a result of the snowy white surroundings. When the grey wolves migrated to the north, the grey stood out so they eventually camouflaged to their surroundings.

Struggles

The wolves of the north have many threats to survive. Global warming is a big threat to the wolves environment. The warmer temperatures are melting the snow and ice around them causing the food like ox and snow hares to more and find more food causing food supplies to run low. Global warming also causes their camouflage to be useless and the thicker coat to become useless. They rarely come intact with humans but industrial development is causing increasing numbers of mines, roads, and pipelines causing their food supply to go down.

Natural or artifical selection?

The Arctic wolf goes through natural selection. The wolf originated from the Grey wolf. They modified to have a new species all together. They grey wolf also has different subspecies like the Eastern timber wolf, Great plains wolf, Mexican wolf, North Western grey wolf, and of course the Arctic wolf. When natural selection occurred when variation was inherited by the parents. this is called heritability. The variations it inherited was different color and a thicker coat.

Homologous and Vestigial organs

Wolves have all types homologous structures. Like the bat, elephant, human, and seals, they share a common homologous structure. Their humerus, radius, and ulna share a common use in there appendages. they also have a similar shoulder built. A vetigial structer they have is a fifth toe. Their fifth toe on their hind legs don't really serve a purpose. It doesn't help with running, jumping, or laying down so it doesn't really have a function. Some believe that it could be helpful to digging.

50 years later

In fifty years , because of global warming, the Arctic wolf will need to adapt. Because of the warmer weather, the snow will melt and it would get hotter. Also when more humans move up there and start up factories the soot from the chimneys would cause the snow and ice to change to black or grey insted of white. They would need a lighter coat and a darker color. The wolves would also have to change their eating habits. They would need to be able to survive longer with out food and change their diets. They would probably have to adapt to eating grass or a different animal that also lives in the arctic. Therefor their teeth would have to get used to eating some plants then just animals.
