Students will develop fundamental scientific reading comprehension skills. Maxjournal is an easy to use mobile journal that integrates many features of scrap-booking and journal writing in a digital format. The app supports multiple journals and is cloud based making it easy for a teacher to assess student journal entries.
In the science classroom Maxjournal can be used with project based learning, where students conduct lab based inquiries to answer a fundamental question. Through Maxjournal students can log their lab progress, analyze what they observe and write out what they have learned. Pictures and lab data can be integrated allowing Maxjournal to serve as a students scientific notebook.
Layar is an augmented reality browser designed for mobile phones and tablets. Layar allows classroom materials to come to life by virtually augmenting real life objects and images. Layar is QR code based and content is user generated allowing countless possibilities for classroom interaction
In the classroom, one application of Layar is to make activities more engaging and interactive. A common beginning of the year activity in the science classroom is familiarizing students with lab safety and lab equipment (beakers, flasks etc.) Using Layar, QR codes and be made, printed and placed on various lab equipment within the classroom. As students walk around the classroom, they scan the QR code with their device linking them to information, videos, questions about the equipment. QR codes can also be placed on lab safety equipment which would link to lab safety rules.
Quizlet is a mobile app that allows students to study in a flexible manner. It allows students to create flash cards, make quizzes and share them. It not only allows them to create, it allows for the use of quizzes and flash cards other people have made. This can make students more successful in a subject area they may find challenging. It's a way for students to engage with the course material.
In the classroom, Quizlet can be used a classroom starter activity where students are either doing quizzes to review concepts or creating flashcards based on vocabulary words provided to them by the teacher. Building scientific vocabulary is important, Quizlet makes it easy to do that.
Yabber Magazine is an interactive science application that integrates science games, multimedia animations set to an adventure type story line. This app is great for younger science learners as it is easy to use, promotes science literacy and is an a format that is engaging and interactive. Topics from the science classroom can be augmented by using Yabber as an introduction to the comprehension of scientific articles and concepts.
