Shel Silverstein was born into a jewish family. He attended Roosevelt High School, University of Illinois, and Roosevelt University. He was then drafted into the army and served in Korea and Japan. He had one child with Susan Taylor Hastings named Shoshanna Jordan Hastings. She died at the age of 11 and her mother died 6 years earlier. He also had a son named Matthew with Sara Spencer. Matthew is still alive today. Shel died of a massive heart attack on May 30 at Key West Florida.
Shel started his illustrating career at the age of 7 tracing the works of Al Capp. He was first published in a school newspaper and he wrote while he was overseas. He mostly writes poems for young children, but he has written many songs as well.
My skin is sorta brownish, pinkish ,yellowish, white
My eyes are grayish blueish green, But I’m told they look orange in the night.
My hair is reddish blondish brown,
But it’s silver when it’s wet.
And all the colors i am inside, have not been invented yet.
