Women were raised to think they were less then men that they are supposed to be a servant to their husbands. Women were to only take care of the household and raise the children while the men provide for their family. Depending on your social scale you were arranged a marriage but if you are commoner you would marry your neighbor. In order to get married, the woman had to be a virgin or the man would lock her up in a stable with a wild horse and leave her with nothing to eat.
