THE ADVENTURES OF
TOM SAWYER

by Carlotta & Margherita

This year for the project Read On we have read many books and "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" is our favourite. This novel was written by Mark Twain in 1876.

The Plot

Tom is a 10-year-old boy, who lives in the village of St Petersburg, Missouri, on the banks of the Mississippi River. He's a smart and lively guy. He lives with his Aunt Polly, who adopted him when his mother and his father died.

His companions of adventures are mainly Huck Finn and Joe Harper. The first is the son of the town drunkard. He is despised by the other mothers because they don't have rules.

Tom falls in love with a girl who has recently arrived in the village, Becky. She is the daughter of a judge and they get engaged.

One day, Tom returned home with dirty clothes and his aunt decided to punish him. She made him painted the fence and he managed to convince his friends to do his job in exchange for a small reward. After that, Tom and Huck went to a cemetery to bury a cat and they assisted the murder of Dr. Robinson, who was killed by Injun Joe. He blamed his mate Muff Potter and after a series of events, he was arrested. Tom and Huck swore to tell anything about the crime. However, when they saw that Muff Potter was desperate, they accepted to give witness in court. During the process Joe the Indian managed to escape.

Tom, along with Huck and Joe Harper organized an adventure: they will on an island in the Mississippi and they'll stay there for a week. Their families and friends get very worried and believed that they were dead. So the families organized a funeral. During the ceremony they appeared out of the church and become popular.

Tom and Becky decide to have a picnic but get lost in a cave where they discover that Joe the Indian had taken refuge with a treasure. In the end, they manage to escape and the police discover that Joe is dead. After a week Tom and Huck find the treasure.

Why we liked this novel

We liked this book because it's easy to read. Although the first chapters are a bit boring, after a while the reading becomes addictive. You really get hooked by the story.

We think that you might identify with the characters of this book because once you feel like we are all a bit like Tom Sawyer, with our dreams, disappointments, love for life, fears and loves. The novel describes the ideal life that every child would like to have: being able to let it go, be spontaneous, try new experiences and follow our own imagination.
