Apps for Mobile Learning
for use in the classroom K-12
For module 9 I have come up with 5 different mobile apps that can be used in the classroom that will aid in student and teacher development. These apps will reduce or remove learning barriers when used appropriately.
Edmodo is a perfect app to be used in the classroom for teachers and students. This app is a blogging site that allows for a variety of tools, connection, engagement, and measurement to be used in the classroom. "Edmodo is designed to get students excited about learning in a familiar environment. On Edmodo, teachers can continue classroom discussions online, give polls to check for student understanding, and award badges to individual students based on performance or behavior".
An example of how this could be used in the classroom is to have a discussion post where students could all voice their opinions or concerns and the teacher could respond and this would allow for greater collaboration and communication.
Google is a great site that also offers a variety of tools that can be utilized in the classroom from K-12. Among these tools, the most useful might be Google Docs. This allows for greater collaboration and is very easy to use for many tasks: assignments, group work, presentations etc.
An example of how this could be used in the classroom is setting up a Google Doc and having questions where students input their ideas, then looking at them with the class and reviewing what they thought. This would allow for everyone to answer and be involved efficiently in the classroom.
Quizlet is an internet site that designs study tools for students. "Quizlet is the largest flash cards and study games website" (source). This site helps students study and provides many different styles of study material, such as: multiple choice exams, flashcards, worksheets, and matching tests.
This site would be ideal in the classroom in giving students a chance to practice material in any subject before an exam. In grade 10 Social Studies, students could do a multiple choice exam and then review with the teacher.
Evernote is a great app that can be used in the classroom to remove or reduce learning barriers. This tool allows for both students and teachers to create notes that can include picture, text and audio. It also is a great way to manage these notes and provides a way for people to collaborate and share notes.
This could be used in a grade 11 classroom where students have to take notes about a presentation and add pictures that help explain it. Alternatively this could be used in a grade 6 classroom where students have to make notes at the end of the day about what they need to complete for the next day.
My Big Campus
My Big Campus is an internet site that is a great tool for mLearning. "Anytime, Anywhere, Any Device... With My Big Campus, your individual learning experience goes with you wherever you go". This app is available in an IOS App, Android App, and a Mobile App for both Windows and BlackBerry. It helps teachers by allowing you to track your student progress, engage students, plan lessons etc. Students are able to complete assignments, create groups, collaborate and personalize their own profile on My Big Campus.
It is easy to see that this has an endless list of uses in the classroom, one of which could be with a Grade 10 class where there are multiple assignments to complete before a certain date. These can also be automatically graded.
