Photojournalist/ New York Film Academy Los Angeles

Jerry Sherlock, founder of The New York Film Academy discovered he could make a change in the world for the kids who were eager to learn about film making. In 1992 the first Academy was opened within the Tribeca Film Center in New York. It began getting noticed when Sherlock started giving the "hands-on" experience. Although many judged and said it was dangerous to put such expensive equipment on such inexperienced  kids, he knew that the best way to learn was hands on. Ever since it's become one of the top film school across the world.

I would like to go to this university because it's become one of the most prestigious film-making colleges cross the Unites States. Also, due to the fact that I want to go into photography this offers hands- on experience. In fact, during the summer they offer a weeks worth of adventurous learning.

WhAT do i need to get in?

Admission requirements include a high school diploma and the ability to speak English. However, the academy doesn't require a minimum GPA, SAT or ACT scores.

WHy I WAnt to be a photojournalist

I've chosen photojournalism as my career choice because I see it as the best way to express creativity. It isn't about taking a picture and writing a story, it's about capturing a moment and revealing the meaning. This is something I want to do in a future. I want to capture the moments worth capturing and write about them. I've always loved writing and I think this is a way to expand on that in an even more creative perspective.

To be a photojournalist gives you the power to let other people see the way you view things. You're giving news out to the world, but you also get the entire story behind it. I don't think I'd like sitting around in an office, and being a photojournalist, you don't have to. You're active and you get moving around chasing the news that needs to be told.

As a photojournalist you become the "eye". What you capture influences what others view the story as.
Remember, you choose what's newsworthy. You decide what specific moment reveals the story.

JOb Discription

A photojournalists job is to tell a story trough pictures rather than words. In this job you have to know how to make fast and smart decisions. The picture you take has to reveal the story, so you have to identify what's worth taking. After you take them, you get them to your publisher. As a photojournalist you can be in danger, when you take on the assignments of wars, accidents and human suffering. This job means unpredictable hours and days, but you can also work on your own and get your own hours. If you work on your own, you can sell to several companies and have your own schedule. This job doesn't require any specific training, although, a bachelors degree in either photography or journalism is preferred by employers. "Freelancers" are self employed and get paid by each photo or series. A rookie full time worker can get paid up to $9.83 hourly or $20,450 yearly, an experienced worker gets paid about $19.63 hourly or $40,830 yearly. You're a photojournalist forever, you just get more experienced which increases job offerings as well.

Photojournalist Krista was interviewed and asked several questions.

What's the biggest challenge in your job? : "To find balance in my personal life due to the time demands and spontaneity of the work hours."

What personal characteristics are required for someone to be successful in you job? : "Having a “good eye” is also important. A photojournalist must be able to see things that other people can’t. They should be able to anticipate shots and find emotion in each scenario."

James, also a photojournalist was also interviewed.

What other jobs could you do with the skills you have gained in this field? : "Photojournalists could work as news reporters. They could also work in some capacity that deals with people and world events or helping people in various situations like humanitarian or social work."

How much job security is there for people in your job? : "Job security is all in the effort and networking that you do. One must promote oneself and be diversified to survive. It is not different from having a business in that it has its ups and downs."

Scholarship essay

Dorothea Lange once wrote, "photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still." I believe that it couldn't have been said any better, due to the fact that indeed that is what photography does. Getting a scholarship to The New York Film Academy would be a dream come true. Photography is a true passion I have, and I believe there would be no better place to develop a higher level of understanding than here.  Also, I'm impressed with the motto of "hands on learning" and equality for everyone.

Dedication for photography goes beyond limits for me. I understand that being a part of the institute, that's what is expected. Not only am I truly enthusiastic about leaning but I am also very eager to explore. To be a part of a diverse mixture of cultures and to discover new and better ways to do things gives me a thrill. Although I know there's many other colleges that teach this field, in my opinion this institute has the best way of teaching. I would truly dedicate all my time to becoming a better, stronger learner and take my skills to a much higher level. Teaching others what I'd learn would be no problem, because after all the knowledge you uphold is better when it's shared. It's because I see that this institute thinks this way that I am encouraged to be a part of it. I am determined to show what I have to offer to this institute and with great pleasure say that I leaned everything I know from there. I know that being a graduate of this academy would be an open doors to a whole new world of opportunities in the field. Great and very successful people, artists have gone here and I aspire to be one of them. For great dreams and ambition I am most certainly encouraged to go to The New York Film Academy.

Without a doubt I believe that I would be the best candidate for this scholarship. For the given reasons, I think, I posses what it takes on to take on this challenge.
