HIV/AIDS

#Antiretroviral Therapy: Treatment where a combination of antiretoviral drugs works to disable the retroviruses in a patient before the virus can affect more blood cells and reproduce. This treatment is meant to prolong the lives of those that have AIDS or HIV.

Antiretroviral Therapy does have side effects. Resistance to this treatment is also a factor of this drug.

Target Population: Pregnant women, and patients who test positive for HIV/AIDS.

Health Infra-structure needed: Pharmacies and the health/clinic workers to administer drugs to people with HIV/AIDS, which are used for containment.

#Tuberculosis co-infection treatment: Provides treatment for people who contract TB while having HIV/AIDS. It consists of a full course of antibiotics.

Drawbacks of this are that people may ease off the drug when they are feeling better, which can cause resistance to the drug.

Target Population: People infected with both HIV/AIDS and TB.

Health infra-structure needed:

Pharmacies and the health/clinic workers to administer drugs to people with HIV/AIDS, which are used for containment.

#Education: Informs people of HIV/AIDS, which helps limit the amount of cases of HIV/AIDS.

Drawbacks of this is that people have to follow precautionary measures for it to be effective.

Target Population: Everyone

Health infra-structure needed: Anyone can do this, by providing useful precautionary guidelines to prevent STDs such as HIV/AIDS.

#Blood Donor Screening: Vigorous screening of blood that has been donated has aided to the prevention of spreading the disease through blood transfusions.

Drawbacks-It takes a longer period of time to process the donated blood, since it now has to be screened for HIV and AIDS as well.

Target Population: Anyone that is either a donor of blood or is going to receive a blood transfusion.

Health-Infrastructure Needed: Workers that can run the process of blood screening.

#Programs That Focus on Drug Use: many programs that aid in the prevention of AIDS and HIV through educating drug-users in the proper use of needles and syringes. These organizations encourage users to use their own needle rather than sharing with other users.

Drawbacks: Drug-users are not likely to follow the advice given to them through the organizations

Target Population: Drug Users

Health-Infrastructure Needed: A knowledgeable medical professional that can influence the drug population the best.
