Krakatoa is a volcanic island located in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia.

The series of eruptions that took place over August 26th-27th in 1883 are some of the most violent volcanic events recorded in history. The explosions could be heard from up to 3,000 miles away and resulted in the death of over 35,000 people, thousands more injured, and the destruction of two-thirds of the island of Krakatoa.
