New England Government and Ideas
New England ran under a direct democracy meaning that the people voted on policies and leaders directly instead of representatives. The Fundamental Orders of Connecticut was a document written by a puritan that is credited in being the first constitution in America. The Mayflower Compact was a document of agreement written by the people arriving in Plymouth in 1620 basically saying that they promise to stick together and help each other. Town hall meetings were organized so members of the community could meet and legislate policies and politics, this was greatly used in a direct democracy government.
