The Question

While designing a house, an architect used windows like the one shown below. What are the dimensions of the window if it has 2766 square inches of glass?

First find the area of the window

Next write the equation in ax^2 = c form

Isolate x^2

Now solve for x

Length cannot be negative. So the rectangular portion of the window is 34in. Wide by 2× 34, or 68in. Long. The semicircular top has a radious, 1/2 × 34, or 17 in.
