  • Son of wealthy Mayor Pedro Ruy de Magalhaes and of Alda de Mezquita
  • He had 5 siblings

Education

  • Magellan was tutored at the court of Portugal
  • One of his teachers was believed to be the cartographer and navigator, Martin Behaim and Magellan become interested in making great voyages of discovery
  • He also studied the maps of Christopher Columbus
  • Studied at Queen Leonora's School of Pages in Lisbon

Important Info

  • Led the first European voyage to sail around the world
  • He was accused of selling/trading illegally with the Moors of Spain
  • The King withheld employment from him so he left to live in Spain

Accomplishments

  • Magellan convinced King Charles I of Spain to support his voyage to the Spice Islands
  • He decided to sail westward to get to the Spice Islands (north-east of Indonesia)
  • Took a fleet of 5 ships (one gave up and turned back)
  • He made it to the Philippines where he took part in a local war and was killed
  • The remaining members of the fleet kept going and completed the circumnavigation of the globe
  • Only 18 out of 170 sailors made it and only one ship remained
