Edgar Allan Poe

Born:  January 19, 1809
Boston, Massachusetts, United States

Edgar Allan Poe was an American author, poet, editor, and literary critic. He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career.Born in Boston, he was the second child of two actors. His father abandoned the family in 1810, and his mother died the following year. Thus orphaned, the child was taken in by John and Frances Allan, of Richmond, Virginia. Although they never formally adopted him, Poe was with them well into young adulthood. Over the years Poe became in debt and did not have enough money to support himself so he joined the military and did other jobs. He is considered one of the world's greatest poets.

Poe's career in poetry has spanned all his life. He has written numerous poems that have left many marks on American culture. Poe is said to have influenced short stories, mystery, and even science fiction. In my opinion, Edgar Allan Poe was a literary genius and will be remembered for years to come.

A stanza from Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;--
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.
She was a child and I was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea,
But we loved with a love that was more than love--
I and my Annabel Lee--
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.
