Life During the Civil War
My name is Jane. I live in Cleveland, Ohio. The year is 1861. I am 17 years old. I live with my mom and my sister while my dad is off fighting for the Union.
Day 1, June 30, 1863.
Living during this time isn't the best, you worry sick everyday but you have to keep living your life. No matter how hard it is, you have to look past the bad. Considering what is happening out there, I have a pretty average life. I have to wake up every morning at 5 am and help mom with the cooking and with the farm. I have to do the laundry and if we need it, I have to go down to the market. Then it comes time in the afternoon, me and my sister usually have to feed the farm animals and now that dad is gone, we have more repsonsibilities to do. Today all of us went down to the market and was helping families that had loved ones in the war like us. We gave them food and just general advice to them. It feels great to help people.
Letter to dad
Day 2, July 1, 1863
I heard about what is going on. The Battle of Gettysburg. Mom said you might be in it. We are all worried sick about you and all we do is prey everyday. I can not even come close to imagine what it is like, I hate war, I hate evil dad, and hate how you're not here. You always taught us women to be strong and that's what I am doing, for you. Well we gotta go down to the market to get sis new clothing, she's growing up dad. Please coem home soon, we miss you dearly. We love you.
Day 3 July 2, 1863
Today was another normal day. I'm pretty sure dad's letter is already on it's way to him. I can't wait to hear from him. But anyway, today me and sis sewed soldier unifroms and got to meet so many new people. Mom was making someof her home made meals for some of the families. But I saw some pretty bad things today, I know that I'm going to be a nurse one day but today some of the things I saw, it was horrible. I helped some of the soldiers that were hurt. Well it's time for me to go to bed.
It's been a few weeks but I finally received the letter back from dad! It says:
I just want to say that I am alright. I miss you guys so much. Please don't ask how I am surviving this but I am. I pray for my life every day and night and I have something to live for, my children and my beautiful wife. I can not stress how much I miss and love you guys. The battles are very rough. The recent one I was just on July 19, the Battle of Buffington Island. But we won! It was a rough one but we pulled through. Well I have to go now. I love you my ladies. I better hear back from you girls.
I am so glad that dad finally responded. When mom saw the letter she started crying. It's really nice to hear that he's okay and alive.
After the civil war
Its official, the war is over and dad is coming home. We heard about what happened to Abraham Lincoln. He helped so much with the states and I still can not believe that he is gone. We found out when we went down to the market to get more milk jars and help out at the shelter. Everyone is devastated about it. The town is speechless.
Mom was crying about it. Everything is so horrible and it's just not right what has happened. He was a good man and didn't deserve that. I never understood war and evil and killing, I don't understand how people could do that to others. I heard he got shot in the head.
First it was the war and now this, I seriously don't get it. First we are a normal loving country and then you have people wanting to fight. But I guess it was all for it to end slavery. I never met Mr. Lincoln myself, but I heard he was a good man. It sucks to have the best people go. He sure did serve this country good.
