Holocaust Pen-Pal Project - Final Assessment

The collaborative aspect of the assignment made it more personal and special to write to a real person. Overall this assignment went well for me. I experienced little challenges because if I got stuck I could get ideas from the other person’s writing. I had a good experience because it was fun and creative to chose my persons experiences and their path in life.

Letter #5

Dear Berek,

I'm facing the challenges and hardships of concentration camps which was brought among jews for reasons i don't know. I have not written for a while because my sisters and I were forced to take a train to a camp. We finally arrived in Auschwitz. During our first moments in the camp I was assigned to a barrack. Luckily, I was with my sisters and Anastazja, a friend we met on the train. This is what I overheard,

“Willis, if you go to the showers you’ll never come back,”

The Nazis told us that we didn’t need to go to the showers. I was so relieved.

We were joined by other young people who were sent back as well. The very next day my sisters, Anastazja and I were sent to a neighboring camp.

Life in this camp is very hard and physically demanding but some things are ok. This camp is better than the main Auschwitz camp because there are less people, there is slightly more food to go around and we have jobs. In the morning everyone has to line up and we have roll-call using the number they tattooed on our backs when we arrived. Getting the tattoo was very painful and degrading. I am now just a number to the Nazis This roll-call took place regardless of the weather or our health. Each day we have 3 meals each being very small. Breakfast is coffee or herbal tea with bread saved from the night’s before dinner. Lunch is watery soup and if you are lucky you have a piece of turnip or potato peel in your soup. Dinner is black bread or sausage. None of the meals smell good nor do they taste good but they keep me alive. I think it is a miniscule amount of food but at least we have 3 meals. Not enough for all people to survive on, some did and some did not. Our jobs take up most of the day. The girls were assigned sewing and I was assigned to work on roads with the other young men. It took me a few weeks to get used to the manual labor. My sisters got used to sewing quick because my mom used to sew with them. The sleeping conditions are very crowded. Some bunks have four to a bunk. The bathrooms are not sanitary, not private and very few. I cannot believe I ever complained about having two bathrooms in my old house. I wish this never happened. I wish we went into hiding.

I write to my parents but they have not responded. I am lucky that I do not closely know anyone who has died yet. I feel scared that my parents may be dead. Depression is seen everywhere and everyone feels it. Is the war ever going to end?

Your friend,

Hero’s Journey Essay

In every story there is a hero that hero experiences ups and downs but always ends up learning something. The outsiders is about a group of greasers that live in oklahoma and go through ups and downs like deaths of group members to making friends with socs the enemy gang. The Outsiders by S.E Hinton is a monomyth because Ponyboy experiences a heros journey.

Ponyboy experiences the separation from the known when Johnny kills Bob and they have to run away. This quote right after Johnny killed Bob. They are scared what the police will do. “‘ you really killed him , huh Johnny.’”(57) “‘We gotta get outa here. Get somewhere. Run away.”’ (57) In the hero's journey, the separation from thee known/ comfortable is when the hero leaves normal known life and separates from the comfortable and normal. In the outsiders, The separation from the comfortable is when Johnny kills Bob and they run away. This is the separation from the comfortable because he realizes its not just a nice little world people die and lifes not fair. running away is the separation because they are away from home away from the normal.

In conclusion the outsiders represents a heros journey. when johnny experiences ups and downs corresponding with the steps of the heros journey. even in low points and hard times theres always good so stay “gold”.
