Dmitri Mendeleev

Discovered the periodic law in 1869 while  at the St. Petersburg technological institute.

This is important because it allowed him to create the periodic table, which is similar to the one used today. He sorted the elements on the periodic table by their atomic mass. The periodic table he created allowed him to predict properties of elements that had yet to been discovered. One downside of the table is he was not able to predict the existence of noble gases, eventually once they were discovered they were added to the periodic table. The periodic law even pointed out that some atomic weights being used at the time were wrong.
