Hernan born in Medellin, Spain, during  1485. He first served as a soldier in an expedition of Cuba led by Diego Velazquez in 1511.During the expedition he traveled to mexico with about 500 infantry units and 11 ships built for war in 1519. He set his sights on overthrowing the Aztecs and their ruler Montezuma II in the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan.Cortes took Montezuma hostage and his soldiers took the city for himself. Cortes left the city after learning that Spanish troops were coming to arrest him for disobeying orders. A few years later the Aztecs eventually drove the Spanish from Tenochtitlan, but Cortes returned to defeat the natives and take the city in 1521.After victory, Cortes continued to seek opportunities to gain wealth and land. He sent more expeditions out into new territory, including what is present-day Honduras.

Cortes once said Thus they have an idol that they petition for victory in war; another for success in their labors; and so for everything in which they seek or desire prosperity, they have their idols, which they honor and serve.
