Violation of Human Rights

Article 12 Violation

Everyone in this day and age should be allowed to have their own privacy when it comes to what they do behind their closed doors and on the phone talking to someone. The only reason that we don't have very much privacy anymore is because of terrorists and the fact that not everybody can be trusted. The biggest reason that the government is worried is because they don't want another 9/11 to happen. The government has to listen in on people to make sure that they are not doing anything illegal or suspicious.

The Article of Human Rights that gets violated when this happens is Article 12. Article 12 states that "No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks." The only reason that this human right is being violated is because of terrorist attacks and threats.

How do the people have this right violated you might ask. They ways that this happens is because the government taps your phone calls and makes sure that you are not doing anything suspicious and talking about anything illegal and they can also see everything that you text to anyone anywhere. This precaution is in some ways necessary but it also violates human rights in the process.

This violation has been addressed and things have happened such as taking the government to court. The government had been put on trial march 13 and march 14, 2014. The government was put on trial to evaluate the for a review for its compliance  the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). Which is a human rights treaty that was ratified in 1992. The result was not released to the public.

Many things can be done to stop this violation of our human rights. Things such as put the government on trial again and force them to stop tapping our lines. Also we can bring up this violation to everybody and petition for it to stop because the people have a loud voice and even the smallest thing can change a lot. Another thing that can be done is that everybody can start to just talk privately, such as write letters to each other or even just talk to someone in person instead of talking or texting over the phone.
