Genetics Vocab

Chromosomes are threadlike strands in the nucleus that contain the DNA. An example is if you have green eyes then either your parents both had recessive genes for green eyes or they both had green eyes.

A gene is the basic physical and functional unit of heredity. An example is recessive genes and dominant genes.

Traits are a distinguishing characteristic or quality. An example is your hair type. Like if you have wavy, curly, or straight hair.

Dominant genes are genes that show themselves more clearly. An example is brown eyes.

Recessive genes are genes that hide in the background. An example is green eyes. Green eyes are recessive because they are not common

Genotypes are the genetic constitution of an individual organism. An example is your genetic make up.

The phenotype is the set of observable characteristics of an individual. An example is your hair color.
