Kinda Tastes Like Home
Everybody's study abroad experience is unique, but the obvious commonality between them is displacement. The food, the landscape, and the people students find themselves surrounded by are all wildly unfamiliar. The crazy part is that these strangers accept you and provide you with cultural guidance and friendship. Without these remarkable people, time spent abroad is far less informed and far more lonely. People that go abroad find all kinds of things to miss: landmarks, restaurants, sweets, and even public transportation. I miss all of these, but most of all I miss the people that made me feel like I had a home, even though mine was so far away. These friends made a concerted effort to provide me with the flavor of an impromptu family, and I only hope that I can pay that forward somehow.
