Journal of the civil war

By Parker Miles

Dear Journal

My name is Parker Miles. I grew up in Chicago Illinois and I have been homeless for about six months. I am from Chicago but I have no house because I am homeless. Before I joined the army. I was a just trying to to stay alive by eating food an old farmer let me have twice a week. I was happy about fighting in the war because I finally get food on a daily basis. I am fighting on the Union side because I have seen the tortures of slavery and the ways that the slaves are treated are treated like animals. I have the Private rank in the army. I think I am this because I haven’t gone through any training before. My family used to include of my wife and three kids but they are dead they all died of sickness or starvation.

We are lined up to drill like everyday.

Dear cousin,

My camp is in Washington D.C. I am in the center of all the tents that are on the left side of were we do our drilling and our eating and where we spend our free time. On the average day we wake up at sun rise eat and then drill for quite a while and then we eat one more time and then we do our chores like make the food clean and chop wood. Then we have free time. We usually writ in journals send letters  and play cards. If somebody is to skip a drill or doesn't get up they they will either be kicked out or they will be they will have no free time and work dusk to dawn.

From Parker

Jeremiah why did you lie about your age?

I wanted to fight for what I believed in. If i didn't my parents would be very upset and would tell me to leave and never come back. So that is why I didn't tell the truth.

Jeremiah looking back at the story what is something that you are proud?

I saw my brothers and he was laying there dead with a bayonet stuck in his head.I took the bayonet out of his head and wrapped his head with some cloth.I am proud of my brother fighting and I am happy that I got to see him but I wish that he wouldn't of died.

What is one thing that you wished you could have changed about your life?

I wish that I was old enough to fight legally so I wouldn't have to lie about my age. Also I wish that My brother and I fought with each other in the same regiment.

How would you of felt if you didn't see your brother dead  or alive?

If i didn't find my brother than I would have left the army and went home because i didn't want my mom have to suffer if both of her sons died.

To the tune of what does a fox say:

Lincoln says “no slavery”

Davis says “YES!”

Grant says “stay united”

and Lee says “No”

But there is one sound that no one knows…..

What does a confederate soldier say!!!!

Dear mark

On the camp i have been playing cards with my friends and have been playing cards and played baseball. My favorite thing to eat is probably hard tack because it last for a long time and i can not worry about it going bad. Also i don't like the salted meat because it is almost not eatable because it is so bad.

This is me talking to my room mate.

Dear cousin Mark

Hello this is Parker miles your cousin i wanted to tell you in case i don't make it through the quick steps or even worse my amputated pinky finger I would like to tell you that I am happy that you gave me the idea of coming out to fight and i am happy to have known you and i am happy for everything you have done to me

Dear cousin Mark

I feel very grateful that I can come home and actually see somebody that I have meet before in my life. The war ended with a union victory we out numbered the rebels 1 to 4 and we demolition them we lost very little. I was shot in the hand but nothing serious i just lost some fingers. I was very pleased with how all of us fought and how brave we were. I see that america is almost back together and we are going to be making in through all this fighting.I feel that everyone will have a hard time making it through all this. I think that I might get a job and help you at your plantation.

love Parker Miles
