Helping to Create a Better Future
The term child labor is best defined as work that deprives children of their childhood, their dignity, and that is harmful to their physical and mental development in any manner. The practice of having children engage in economic activity, on part or full-time basis interferes with their ability to attend regular school and thus, affects their childhood. Poverty, lack of good schools and growth of the informal economy are considered to be the leading causes of child labor in India.
The practice of child labor has been found throughout the globe for centuries now, children under the age of 16 years have been forced to work in many unacceptable condition. Survey suggests that the biggest cause of child labor is poverty. Similarly, poverty and inadequate education opportunities are some of the causes of child labor in India.
In India the issue of child labor is huge and it demands support and contribution from every person. Recently, the Government has taken some concrete steps to improve the situations of these children. Measures are being taken to provide them with free education and even allocating funds for their health and development. However, the problem still seems to be at large. Several NGOs, are trying to improve the condition of these unfortunate children.
NGOs like CRY UK strive to protect the basic rights of children like the right to survival, to nutrition and to education. We cannot undermine the huge role these NGOs play in uplifting children and saving them from the clutches of child labor. NGOs address issues related to lack of sensitivity and infrastructure for children’s rehabilitation, along with their education. Most NGOs concentrate mainly on education, as it is the basis on which a better future can be built. A good education will equip the children with the skills they need to get a steady job and end the vicious cycle of poverty.
