Born June 17, 1916 Died October 15, 1999 (age 83) Gilkyson was born in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania and graduated from St George's high school in 1935. By his early twenties, he had become a worker on a ranch in Tucson, Arizona, then joined the military during World War I. In 1947, he married Jane Gilkyson and moved to California to pursue a career as a folk singer.
Terry Gilkyson's moto for life was "The bare necessities, the simple bare necessities Forget about your worries and your strife" which was inspiration for one of his songs .Terry Gilkyson did a lot of music for Walt Disney movies: such as, "Bear Necessities" from The Jungle Book and "Thomas O'Malley" from The Aristocats.
Guitarist Tony Gilkyson, formerly of the band X, and Austin singer-songwriter Eliza Gilkyson are Terry Gilkyson's son and daughter. His other daughter Nancy has served for 20 years as a vice president at Warner Bros. Records.
